Many private companies, Not-For-Profit organisations, government and developers, have realised that new developments (defined as plans, processes, projects, policies and programmes) cannot be forced on the receiving organization or communities as they have particular needs, fears and concerns, which are ignored at the peril of the developer or management of the organisation. Furthermore, these concerns and indigenous knowledge can more often than not be of benefit to the developer or organisation.

For this reason, participatory processes have become increasingly important. That said, working with groups of divergent opinions are fraught with difficulty and it takes skill and a certain art to develop processes that will provide all parties concerned with the needed information, decision-making power and opportunity for input.
